Benefits and Costs
Why join the Chorlton Car Co-op?
A decade of experience in continental Europe has shown that one car club vehicle
can replace as many as 5 privately-owned cars. Less reliance on a private car means . . .
- Reduced congestion on the roads
- Fewer parking problems
- Less traffic noise and air polution
- Greater incentive to walk, cycle or catch the bus
- A better quality of life all around!
Financial benefits of car co-ops:
- The total costs of owning a car are around £1,500 - £3,000 per year
- If you belong to a car co-op, you needn't pay individual road tax (£166),
buy individual insurance (£200-£400) or pay for any servicing, repairs,
maintenance (£200-£500) or for a recovery service.
- And finally, your car isn't losing resale value annually (£500-£1,500)
How costs compare:
We haven't yet agreed the costs of being a member of the Chorlton Car Co-op, but costs
for similar schemes operating elsewhere in the UK are:
- A fixed membership fee that may be as low as £25 for lifetime membership
- Pay-as-you drive fees that combine mileage charges with hourly rates.
- Some UK car clubs have even negotiated discounts with public transport operators
as a benefit of membership.
